Pixxaro can play an important role in controlling poppy, populations of which have become resistant to ALS herbicides.

Pixxaro, the herbicide launched three years ago, has set new standards in the control of broad-leaved weeds in winter and spring cereals. 

It provides a new level of dependable and flexible weed control from spring applications on all varieties of winter and spring wheat and winter and spring barley.    

It is based on the innovative active ingredient Arylex Active (halauxifen-methyl) and also contains fluroxypyr, the tried and trusted active substance in Starane.

Among the weeds it controls are cleavers, fumitory, fat hen, dead nettle, hemp nettle, poppy, cranesbill, chickweed and black bindweed. 

Where weeds such as brassicas, charlock and pansy are present, Pixxaro should be used with a good tank mix partner. 

It can play an important role in controlling populations of weeds such as poppy that have become resistant to acetolactase synthase (ALS) inhibiting herbicides.  For corn marigold, especially resistant populations, Galaxy should be the product of choice.

 

Pixxaro Facts

  • Weeds controlled include black bindweed, chickweed, cleavers, cranesbill, dead nettle, fat hen, fumitory, hemp nettle, poppy.
  • Apply from GS12 to GS45 on all varieties of winter and spring wheat and winter and spring barley.
  • Application rate: 0.375 – 0.5l/ha.
  • Can be applied at temperatures as low as 0°C.

Flexibility

Its flexibility in all weather conditions, weed sizes and growth stages is a major advantage of Pixxaro, according to Chris Maughan, technical manager with Whelehan Crop Protection.

“It can be applied at temperatures as low as 0°C and up to GS45 of the crop.

“This means that farmers who want to get on with spring weed control early can spray in cold condition and allow Pixxaro to sit in the plant until it starts to grow without any degradation” explained Chris.”

“Under good growing condition, symptoms of activity can be seen within about six days of application as distortion or twisting of the leaves,” said Chris.

Pixxaro is a contact systemic herbicide.  It is classed as a synthetic auxin, similar to hormone chemistry.  Once it enters the weed it is metabolised and then translocated through the vascular system to the growing points.

It mixes perfectly with a wide range of herbicides, fungicides, insecticides and wild oats killers.

ZYPAR ADDS TO THE ARMOURY

Zypar, another recent addition to the cereal herbicide armoury, has similar efficacy to Pixxaro on chickweed, cleavers, fumitory, fat hen, dead nettle, poppy and cranesbill.  It is also effective on brassica weeds such as charlock, volunteer rape and wild radish.

It contains the innovative active ingredient Arylex Active and the well-established ingredient florasulam.

As with Pixxaro, it has major advantages in terms of its flexibility in all weather conditions, weed sizes and growth stages and can be used on all winter and spring wheat and barley varieties.
